Our Cocopeat Block 5kg is compressed 5:1 to save space in the container. With water and a little patience, one block becomes 70–75 litres of loose substrate.

What you need
A container of at least 80–100 litres (a large tub, wheelbarrow or bin), about 20–25 litres of clean water and something to loosen the substrate, such as a garden fork or your hands.
Step by step
- Remove the shrink-wrap and place the block in the container.
- Pour in around 10 litres of clean water and wait 15–20 minutes.
- Add more water in stages until the block has absorbed it and starts to fall apart.
- Break up any dry lumps and mix until the substrate is loose and evenly moist.
- Squeeze a handful: a few drops of water means it is ready to use.
Check before you plant
For sensitive crops or hydroponics, measure the EC of the water that drains out. If it is higher than your crop needs, rinse with clean water and measure again. You can also buffer with a calcium-magnesium solution before planting.
